Still busy! But the frantic edge feels not to be there as much as it has been. Why? More than anything, probably the yoga. And in particular, the breathing aspect of that. It's amazing how that one change can make such a difference.

Amy, it's not backstory that's the problem for him (though I understand what you're saying here...but it's a different concern); it really is that "pull." He does feel "hauled in" and he doesn't want to feel that. I think he wants the story to grow slowly and surround him. He wants that magic of having the world built--and not in one day.
Listening to him has caused me to questions the idea we have--collectively--about so-called reluctant readers.

Right on, no. 3 son of Alison. I HATE books that think "in media res" means you have to start in the middle of the story, then go back to fill in 8,00/ yeafs of unnecessary history. BORING!!!! The backstory poses as the story and there necer js a real story. The author gets to display their mastery of history, and maybe their ability to write but not of their ability to understand human nature or their ability to teanslate backstory into human truths. "In media res" means in the middle of things, not in the middle of the story. In other words pull your reader right into the world you are establishing.
